Bromley triumphant at London Youth Games 2018

The London Youth Games Cricket Finals were held at Lords on Sunday 25th February and the day brought great successes for both the boys and the girls team.

Bromley Boys won the gold medal and crowned champions with the girls finishing with a silver medal.

In the boys’ competition, Redbridge, Hillingdon, Richmond, Hounslow, Bromley, Ealing, Greenwich and Southwark battled it out for top spot.

It was safe to say, Southwark did not have a plain sailing journey to the final. Yet, they maintained a steady, level head in an extremely tight 60-58 encounter against the Hounslow girls in the quarters. Their semi-final match was equally as tense beating Greenwich by just one point (76-75) to reach the final against Bromley.

Bromley battled their way through the quarterfinals in an 80-78 duel against Ealing. However, they ran away with the win against Richmond in the semi-finals to secure that all-important place in the final. Yet Bromley could not be beaten and reigned victorious in a conclusive 94-60 win in the final.

In the female competition, it was the borough teams of Bromley, Hackney, Hillingdon, Richmond, Ealing, Haringey, Redbridge and Hammersmith and Fulham that successfully managed to secure their qualifying places on the day.

The eight teams battled it out in a straight knock out competition. Despite a rather convincing win in the first round against Richmond (90-69), the Hammersmith and Fulham girls were given a good run out in the semi-finals narrowly winning by 2 points (76-74) against an eager Ealing side.

On the other side of the draw, Bromley battled a very hard-working Haringey side in the quarterfinals to secure an 88-72 win straight into the semis. Redbridge could not compete with the speed and skill of the Bromley side and lost out narrowly.

The final was one of the closest this competition has witnessed with just one point separating the Bromley and Hammersmith sides. With some serious levels of skill shown on both sides, the girls were equal pegging until the final few balls. Yet, Bromley could not beat the Hammersmith side and settled for silver.

Very many congratulations to all our players and to Julian Massiah for managing the victorious boys team and to Barry Hainsworth / Mike Askew for managing the girls.
