How C4B Small Grants Scheme has made a difference to girls cricket in Bromley District

Beckenham Girls Mini Super 8 squad

Earlier this year Cricket4Bromley invested money into local clubs through a small grant scheme. Here is the story of one club and how they made use of that grant award:

“This time last year my twin daughters asked why every week there were lots of girls watching at Sunday training instead of having the chance to play.

Given that we had around 150 juniors attending every Sunday it seemed a real shame not to have a girls team.

Ella and Eve joined in for the last few weeks of the season and loved it; so during the winter we made it our aim to field a girls team at the club for the first time, this summer.

During the winter we worked with Chris Whitaker from the ECB, and Tash Newman from Kent Cricket Club Ladies to develop a plan to attract girls to the club.

We set up and funded a coaching programme at Alexandra Juniors (and other local schools) and changed our advertising campaign to make it clear to parents that we really wanted to develop and establish girls cricket at the club.

We employed a female coach to lead the girls section's Sunday coaching and soon our numbers were soaring.  We now have a squad of fourteen under 9s, a group of 6/8 and  older girls, some of whom are starting to play in the boys league teams; with a growing number of younger girls in the 5 to 7 age groups.

The highlight of the season to date was being able to field an all-girls team in the first qualifying round of the Kent CC mini 8s competition

We really want this to be the start of a new era at the club and aspire to be able to field girls teams throughout the junior age groups in the coming seasons.

Beckenham CC would welcome the chance to play friendlies against girls or mixed teams at U9 to U13 age groups; please contact Alan Peters, team manager, at if you can field a team to play us!”

This initiative was started by a parent at the club supported by the coaches and the committee, if you are interested in getting girls playing at your club please contact Bromley District and we will put you in touch with the right people.
